Steel Screens and Pipes

Well screen performance is dependent on several factors, including wire and rod shape, construction, steel grade and microstructure, as well as slot accuracy over the full length of the screen. To meet the most demanding requests, Johnson Screens continues to engineer and manufacture stainless steel screens from 2 ft / 0.7 m to 40 ft. / 12.2 m. In recent years, we have more than doubled our manufacturing capacity by adding new equipment and expanding our factories.

Johnson Screens stainless steel well screens can be constructed out of 304, 304L, 316L and 904L stainless steel. Other corrosion-resistant alloys are available upon request.

Muni-Pak™

Johnson Screens’ solution to improve the gravel pack is the Muni-Pak screen. It simplifies the contractor’s work, improves the chance for successful development and offers long-term benefits. Thanks to state-of-the-art technology and increased strength, the Muni-Pak.

  • Utilizes a smaller borehole
  • Eliminates gravel placement
  • Shortens the amount of time required to drill a well
  • Reduces development time
  • Has a thinner filter pack
  • Reduces overall maintenance costs

Muni-Pak uses ceramic beads as the filter media. This unique concept provides a filter pack that is less likely to foul with biofilm and encrustation.

Pipe Based Vee-Wire® Screens

Pipe based screen combines the hydraulic efficiency of a continuous slot screen with the strength of a pipe. This pipe strength allows smaller wrap wires to be used, yielding greater open area. Longitudinal support rods direct inflow to the nearest pipe perforation. Screen and pipe are welded together to make a rugged, reliable unit for deep vertical wells and long, horizontal remediation of supply wells. Fittings are available to meet most well design and installation requirements.

The pipe based screen is recommended when high collapse resistance is required and when the screens’ length generates a high longitudinal constraint. The pipe strength allows smaller wrap wires to be used, yielding greater open area.

Base pipes can be manufactured using stainless steel grades or API 5CT carbon steel casing. Johnson Screens uses prime pipe, thoroughly cleaned and de-burred after perforating.

Diameters for pipe based screens range from in. 1.5 in. / 38 mm to 18 in. / 457 mm.

Rod Based Vee-Wire® Screens

Johnson Screens® continuous-slot, Vee-Wire construction of rod based screens is known around the world as the industry’s best well screen. Providing more open area, these non-plugging well screens have a tight slot tolerance, effective sand control and a lower entrance velocity.

Our manufacturing capabilities cover the full range from shallow wells to deep wells, where the collapse resistance may be achieved with the use of heavy-duty Vee-Wire.

Johnson Screens’ specific continuous-slot construction aims to optimize flow rates, minimize clogging and help develop the water-bearing geological formations faster. It is best applied in the following situations:

  • Geological formations comprised of small, fine particles
  • Water wells where gravel packs will be installed
  • Thin aquifers, where maximum open area is required
  • Large- and small-diameter deep wells

Available for both small- and large-diameter applications, rod based screens are available in stainless steel, low carbon steel and PVC with slot sizes as small as 0.004 in. / 0.1 mm and lengths up to 40 ft. / 12 m.
